Who is Berg Katse? Who--or what--lurks behind the long-eared mask, the purple cape and the evil cackle that have become this villain's trademark? What is the significance of the female general who is sometimes seen acting on Katse's behalf? And who/what is the entity that lurks behind them? For the length of the series, we've been offered tantalizing glimpses, but no answers...#7 "Gallactor's Great Air Show": Katse makes a showy appearance as a skull-faced ghost pilot who disrupts a major air show.
#21 "Who is Governor X": The alien mastermind behind Gallactor makes his first appearance. When a renegade cyborg specialist comes up with a design the Syndicate wants, Sosai X (to Katse's chagrin) agrees to strike up a deal... personally.
#29 "Gallack X, Demon Man": The female general makes her debut as the sponsor of a cybernetic demon kickboxer.
#31 "Plan to Assassinate Dr. Nambu": The female general leads a squadron of Devil Stars on a special assignment to kill Dr. Nambu aboard a prototype maglev superexpress train.
#32-33 "Grand Operation Gezora": The female general leads a nearly successful plot to kidnap members of the Kagaku Ninjatai.Heroes and villains compete in an elaborate game of "keep away," with Jun and Jinpei as the prizes.
#71 "Immortal Governor X": Katse's mask is ripped off for a teasing glimpse of long blonde hair before Sosai X interferes and appears before the Kagaku Ninjatai for the first time.
#73 "Get Katse!": When Katse's latest mech is shot down, Katse escapes as usual, but Joe manages--against Ken's screamed orders--to blow up the escape craft with a Bird Missile. Katse doesn't die so easily, however, and the Kagaku Ninjatai wind up tracking him through a jungle laden with booby traps. Here it is made clear that the Kagaku Ninjatai's orders are not to kill Katse--only unmask him. If they kill Katse, the villain will simply be replaced (better the devil you know than the devil you don't).
#77 "Berg Katse's Success": The Kagaku Ninjatai are lured to a small, rich country to do bodyguard duty for a President who's run afoul of Gallactor. Little do they know that the President is long dead, the whole country is a trap, and it's all a plot by Katse to keep them busy while he safely makes off with the country's treasury.
#88 "Iron Beast Snake 828": Dr. Nambu discovers key information concerning Berg Katse's early life: that Katse had changed schools every year; that Katse had an IQ of over 200, and that Katse had possibly shifted from male to female each year. Nambu also finds two men who know of Katse's past, and it's up to the Kagaku Ninjatai to find and question them before Gallactor silences them forever.
#102 "Reverse! Checkmate X": Katse is fully unmasked at last (by a backfire caused when Joe plugged the barrel of the Mechaziner ray gun), and Dr. Nambu reveals all: that Katse is a mutant, a combination of male and female twins; a shapechanger and hermaphrodite. Katse manages to flee, and the only thing that keeps him from being hit by Ken's boomerang is a weak moment of pity...
| #105 "Earth Vanishes! 0002": Sosai X reveals his plans to destroy the world as he flees, leaving Berg Katse behind. Betrayed and furious at the fool s/he's been and the life s/he's had to lead, Katse suicides by leaping down the main shaft that leads to the Earth's mantle. | ![]() |
