Smoke-free Restaurants
- Garlic Jo's (Yokohama: Motomachi) An excellent restaurant serving garlic-spiced dishes and great homemade sangria. Completely non-smoking and highly recommended!
- Johnny Rockets (Tokyo: Roppongi) An American-style hamburger place
- La Jolla (Tokyo: Hiroo, Jiyugaoka) Mexican food
- Dalloyau (Tokyo: Ginza, Jiyugaoka) French tea and cake shop
- Subway An American submarine sandwich chain in locations throughout Tokyo and the surrounding areas
- Sengoku Ramen Near Yokohama Station
- Kaiten Zushiya (conveyor belt sushi shops) are cheap and often smoke-free. One suggestion I received was the Tenka Zushi chain
- There are supposedly smoke-free restaurants in the basement of Printemps Ginza. If you can confirm or correct this, please e-mail me.
- Starbucks coffee shops are non-smoking. One thing you have to credit the Starbucks empire for!
- This just in from reader Yuki Diya: Nirvanam is a south Indian restaurant in the Kamiyacho area that offers dishes not normally found in other Indian restaurants. TEL: (03) 3433-1217. Update is from December 2005.
Restaurants with no-smoking sections
Note: Almost all "western" restaurants in Japan offer no-smoking sections (kin en seki). The problem lies in finding a spot that's far enough from the smokers to make a difference. Also, in small places (like McDonald's and Doutor), no-smoking sections exist in name only. Some places have a no-smoking floor--try for those.

Kudos to the officials in Chiyoda-ku for making that ward one big non-smoking area! I never thought I'd see that happen in my lifetime.
