Wendy, circa 1996The name on my birth certificate is Wadine Dinsmore, but I'm better known as "Wendy" or "Diinzumo." Mom must have wanted revenge for the birthing pains, so she named me "Wadine"--causing me to seek refuge in a nickname and cause conflicts on my passport and legal documents. People have tried to bestow me with other nicknames, but these are the only two I'll accept.

Ofuna Kannon, KamakuraI was born in Fort Collins, Colorado, and raised just about everywhere else. As the product of an Air Force family, I traveled to a new home and location every few years. Some of our stations included Tainan, Taiwan and Grant Heights, a military housing area in Tokyo (now a bedroom community called Hikarigaoka).

I graduated with a BA in Fine Art from the University of South Florida in Tampa, after spending four years drawing nude pictures of a large, elderly black lady with a Caesarean scar. After I escaped from college, a friend and I flew to Tokyo to find work as English instructors. What started out as a two-year lark became a long-term stay. I later became a copywriter for a Japanese ad agency, then found a job with Sega Enterprises as a manual writer for home video games. I also did part time proofreading work and cartoons for the old Tokyo Journal. I lived in Kamakura City (a great place to visit), a ten minute walk from this enormous statue of Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy.

After eight and a half years in Japan, I returned to the United States in 1996, seeking a whole new adventure. In 1997 I moved to San Jose, California, got a job with Adobe Systems and learned to fly small airplanes. In 2003 returned to Tampa, Florida.
